The rankings of states in India in terms of poverty might have changed. However, based on the data available up to that point, here were some of the states that were considered to be among the poorest in India.

  3. Uttar Pradesh
  4. Madhya Pradesh
  5. Odisha
  6. Rajasthan
  7. Assam
  8. Chhattisgarh
  9. Arunachal Pradesh
  10. Meghalaya
  11. Nagaland
  12. Manipur
  13. Tripura
  14. Mizoram
  15. Jammu and Kashmir (excluding Ladakh)
  16. West Bengal
  17. Andhra Pradesh (including Telangana from 2014)
  18. Maharashtra (some regions, despite being an economically significant state)
  19. Gujarat (some regions, despite being an economically significant state)
  20. Karnataka (some regions, despite being an economically significant state)
